Point Cook Leads the way in an Australian Sporting First

In an Australian first, works are about to kick off on a new synthetically surfaced football and cricket oval in Point Cook.

Wyndham City awarded the $2.4 million contract for the design and construction of the synthetic oval to TEAM Sports.

The full sized oval, located on Point Cook Road, is the first in Australia to feature synthetic turf, certified to AFL and Cricket Australia standards.

The project has been jointly funded between Wyndham City, Sports & Recreation Victoria (Department of Planning & Community Development), the AFL, Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria.

Construction of the oval is part of the Point Cook Road Reserve Master Plan, which includes plans for:
• Three AFL football and cricket ovals, including the synthetic oval;
• Eight tennis courts, with the provision for future expansion;
• Three soccer fields;
• Passive recreational facilities such as shared trails including work out stations, shelters and barbecue amenities; and
• Associated facilities such as pavilions and car parking.

Wyndham Mayor, Cr John Menegazzo said the construction of the oval is part of Council’s $4.7 million commitment in the 2010/11 budget to the detailed design and construction of the
sporting fields, courts and pavilions at the Point Cook Road Reserve.

“Using this innovative surface, Wyndham City’s sporting community will have access to first class sporting facilities all year round, no matter what the weather brings,” Cr Menegazzo said.

“Works on the oval will begin early next year, with sporting clubs able to use the oval from late next year. Work on two further natural turf ovals adjacent to the synthetic oval will also begin next year.”

Truganina Ward Councillor, Kim McAliney said sporting clubs were an essential part of any community and are fundamental for the physical and mental health of residents.

“Sporting club membership has grown in line with Point Cook’s rapidly expanding population,” Cr McAliney said.

“Point Cook has been at the heart of Wyndham’s population boom, with the number of residents jumping from 14,700 in 2006 to 32,100 in 2011. A further 15,000 people are expected to move to Point Cook over the next 5 years, which is why constructing infrastructure such as this is so vital to the community.”
