Frequently used terms

Yarn
A continuous strand of twisted threads of natural or synthetic material, such as wool or nylon, used in weaving or knitting the material the individual tufts of grass are made from.

Polypropylene
Any of various thermoplastic resins that are polymers of propylene. They are hard and tough, and are used to make moulded articles and fibres A long chain hydro-carbon molecule made from propylene gas which is a bi-product of petroleum distillation.

Polyethylene
A polymerised ethylene resin, used especially for containers, kitchenware, and tubing, or in the form of films and sheets for packaging Provides an inbuilt 'slip' factor that is required in playing surfaces for sports such as football (soccer).

Co-polymer
A polymer of two or more different monomers A combination of both polypropylene and polyethylene.

Monofilament
A single strand of untwisted co-polymer synthetic fibre, used especially for fishing line.

Knit-De-Knit
A process by where the twisted yarn is knitted, then cooked, and un-knitted, leaving a crimpled effect in the strand of yarn.

Denier
A unit of fineness for rayon, nylon, and silk fibres, based on a standard mass per length of 1 gram per 9,000 meters of yarn.

Density
The quantity of something per unit measure, especially per unit length, area, or volume The mass per unit volume of a substance under specified conditions of pressure and temperature.

Tex
A measurement of the density of yarn grams per 1,000 metres

Face/Pile Weight
The total yarn weight above the primary backing.

Total Yarn Weight
The total weight of the tuft length including the tuft back stitch below the primary backing.

Machine Gauge
The measurement between the tuft rows across the machine direction.

Stitch Rate
The number of stitches per 10cm along a stitch row.

Primary Backing
The 100% polypropylene woven cloth into which the yarn is tufted.

Secondary Backing
The latex material applied to the back of the primary backing to lock the tufts of grass into place.

Latex
An emulsion of rubber or plastic globules in water used in paints, adhesives, and various synthetic rubber products. Carboxylated styrene butadiene latex compound is used for the manufacture of synthetic grass.

Tuft lock
A measure of the force required to vertically pull out one strand of the poly ribbon that has been tufted into the backing material.

Perforation
The holes punched through the primary and secondary backing to allow water to drain through.

Joining Tape
The narrow width of polypropylene woven cloth which the recommended adhesives are applied to and the seams of the synthetic turf are laid together on.

Adhesive
Tending to adhere; sticky - glue.
