Baw Baw City Council

West Gipplands Hockey Association in conjunction with the Baw Baw Shire Council held the official opening of the new Aquaturf SL surface Bellbird Park, Drouin on Saturday, 31st July.

The hockey pitch is the first full size synthetic surface in the Gippsland region and was officially opened by Gwen Mulconry, a life member of both West Gippsland Hockey and Hockey Victoria. Gwen cut the ribbon which was made using all the colours of the various clubs that make up the West Gippsland Hockey Association with children from every one of the clubs on hand.

Johan Scheffer, Member (Senator) for Eastern Victoria was also on hand and gave his thanks and paid credit to the hard work over many years by the hockey community in the region in getting the project started and complimented the Baw Baw Shore Council for making it all happen. Greg Heaps from TEAM Sports was also singled out during his speech for his management of the project and the way the project was run in consultation with the hockey club and council to ensure the finished project is a credit to the community.

The hockey players of the West Gippsland and further east will no longer have to travel into Melbourne to play on a synthetic hockey pitch as they can now boast to having a world class surface just down the road from where they live and that the Aquaturf SL will help develop the skills of the junior and senior players in the region to go on and compete at higher levels.

TEAM Sports would like to thank all the people involved at West Gippsland Hockey and Baw Baw Shire Council for their drive, determination, assistance and patience in making this project possible. We hope that all players and officials enjoy playing on the Aquaturf SL for many years to come.
